In Response to Bishop Skylstad

Original Article:  01/01/2003  Bishop Renews Vow of Change

We the Catholic Church are in a crisis that has profoundly eroded the moral integrity of church leaders.

As a SNAP Spokane leader I am horrified at the extent of the sexual abuse/criminal activity in this diocese and the internal hierarchical policies that provide for a clear process of cover-up of abhorrent crimes against innocent children.

Laws have been broken, hearts, spirits, and emotions.

Open up personnel files, financial records, name deceased priests, listen to the voices of victims – that is change.

The real child protection policy change that has taken place this year is the change taking place in the parish pews.  Catholics challenging the bishop for disclosure & accountability.

Another promising policy change in 2003 is the potential changes in the legislature involving the statute of limitations, mandatory clergy reporting and the “crime of cover-up” making hierarchy criminally responsible for covering up crimes.

It’s time to replace abuse, power & secrecy with TRUTH & ACCOUNTABILITY.
