Tuesday, January 06, 2004 - The

catholic churches to prevent sexually abuse by priests. The results of a
country-wide audit show the Archdiocese is within the nation's ten percent that
is failing to fully comply.

Why Father Murphy got all that
ink

PATRICK DOUGHERTY
COMMENT
The key documentation that allowed us to detail the actions of church officials in Anchorage came from the files of the Boston Archdiocese, which made them public only after The Boston Globe got a court order requiring it. (Anchorage church officials still refuse to release any records about Father Murphy, and retired Archbishop Francis Hurley has refused to tell what he knows about Murphy or the events surrounding Murphy's misconduct.)
Father Murphy himself was more forthcoming. After Mauer showed up at his ranch in New Mexico, he answered questions and talked about his life. He admitted having done those things we already knew about but carefully avoided implicating himself in any other misdeeds. He was congenial and charming, just as we'd been told to expect.
